Sports Hero is a retro pixel-style arcade sports game inspired by Olympic track and field competitions. Developed by Cherrypick Games, the browser version was released in 2016 and is playable directly on a computer.
Players select their country and participate in various sporting events, each with its own control scheme. The gameplay focuses on speed, reflexes, and precise timing.
And Sports Hero has all sorts of competitions. Players can compete in a 100m dash, 110m hurdles and a 50m swim. Not all events have the same controls. For instance, running is all about speed, but hurdles require exact timing to clear the barriers.
The remaining events include weightlifting, javelin throw, and long jump. These events require players to execute actions at the right moment. The key to javelin is a balance between running speed and angle of throw, while in the long jump it is a matter of controlling speed and the timing of the jump.
Players begin with a few basic events. Achieving good results earns experience points and unlocks additional competitions. A progression system allows players to continue improving their performance in unlocked events. The game features a career path spanning multiple levels with progressively increasing challenges.
In single-player mode, players compete against AI-controlled athletes. The goal is to get good scores and to push the national team to the top of the tournament ratings.
What’s more, Sports Hero supports head-to-head play between two players on the same device, allowing friends to compete directly against each other in a variety of events.
Besides the main contests, the game also has humorous animations and hidden Easter eggs sprinkled throughout its screens. The retro pixel art style and the short and accessible gameplay provide for the sports experience with a distinct arcade feel.
